20" X 24" Femme dans un jardin (translated in English is Lady in a Garden) was painted in 1912 by Frederick Carl Frieseke. This impressionistic painting depicts a woman in a garden, bathed in the soft glow of summer in the afternoon. The faint yet very present figure seems to almost disappear into the background, almost as though becoming one. With the ever-so-delicate movement implied through brushstrokes, the viewer gets a sense of the gentle breeze. It is unclear who the lady is, but Frieseke was known for painting members of his family. With the angle and distance the artist selected for this composition, the view can almost feel as though they are in a trance-like state. This piece is currently part of the Terra Foundation for American Art in Chicago.
