20" X 24" Self-Portrait at the Age of Twenty Eight by Albrecht Durer was painted in 1500, not long before his 29th birthday. Durer completed three self-portraits and this is was the last to be completed. This particular portrait is considered is his most iconic piece. What is so intriguing about this piece is the style that Durer depicts himself. The symmetry, dark tones, and the raised hand in the middle of his chest are similar to depictions of Christ. In the original Durer's initials, AD, are placed prominently in the background. Which is thought to be a play on Anno Domini, meaning after death when following the timeline of Christ. In medieval times one's 28th year was considered the transition from youth to maturity. This portrait is thought to commemorate not only this transition in life for the artist but also the transition to the millennium.

More beautiful in person than on the website. I am so impressed with this painting. The eyes are done in an exquisite way.
