Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette is an early work by Vincent Van Gogh created in 1886 as a project when he was studying in art school. A skeleton was used in one of his classes to help the students study human anatomy. Although the cigarette in the skulls mouth could be taken as some type of symbolism it was really just a piece of Van Gogh's youthful humor. This painting is an example of a skill set that Van Gogh carried that we do not often see in his work. He had a great talent when working with anatomy. We can see this in only a few of his paintings, including his self portraits. This piece would make an excellent seasonal piece, especially around Halloween, to match your other decorations! Or, if you just want to inject a little bit of humor into a space.
