16" X 20" Spurge, Withyham by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife Margret Mackintosh. The couple created is a composite botanical study which was a popular subject of the artist meant to complement his architectural design. The couple worked together to create many pieces throughout their marriage. This piece was completed in June of 1909. At the top left is a periwinkle, the main subject, spurge, is in the center. On the right is two flowers believed to be rhododendron. The composition shows structure and pattern through the use of fine pencil drawing and watercolor (a medium that was favored by the artist). Our reproduction is an oil on canvas with the same careful attention to color and detail.
