Jean-Honore Fragonard was a famous 18th century French artist known for his Rococo style of art. Rococo emphasized curving natural forms in art and decor. The light and elegant forms in Fragonard's paintings that created a carefree atmosphere set him apart from many other Renaissance artists of the time period. His most known for his intimate, and sometimes subtly erotic paintings of women. He produced over 550 paintings, five of which are dated. The Reader (also known as A Young Girl Reading) is part of a series that features young girls. Originally, Fragonard had the girl looking at the viewer, before he changed his mind and painted over it to have the girl intently reading the book in her hand. With it's bright whites and yellows, this painting would look beautiful hanging on the wall of a kitchen or dining room!
