20" X 24" The Young Sabot Maker by Henry Ossawa Tanner was painted in 1895. This gorgeous oil painting features a young sabot apprentice hard at work pushing his whole body into the crossbar handle of a sawhorse as an older gentleman proudly watches. Woodshavings cover the floor of the workshop. The Young Sabot is a humble and timeless piece that not only transports you back in time but also makes time feel as though its standing still. This painting is meant to install the values inherent dignity and ennobling effect of work from the teachings of Booker T. Washington. Washington supported Tanners education in Paris as a close family friend. Washington emphasized on the importance of training in skilled manual labor, especially for African Americans, and built this into the curriculum he designed.
