24" X 36" Was It For The Best? by American artist Harry Roseland was originally painted in 1904. The painting features a black couple gazing at a portrait of Lincoln, the president that lead the U.S. in its efforts to make all Americans equal. The couple are contemplating wether those efforts where for the best due to the struggles that many black Americans faced after the war. Roseland was best-known for capturing every day life in his genre paintings. Many of his pieces focus on poor African Americans after the Civil War. Roseland never received formal training, but his talent for capturing the scene in photographic detail did receive recognition within his lifetime. Today this original is housed in Minneapolis Institute of Art, but we have recreated this captivating scene with our hand-painted oil on canvas reproduction.
